What is collagen?

COLLAGEN IS THE MOST ABUNDANT PROTEIN IN THE HUMAN BODY AND MAKES UP TO 30% OF THE PROTEIN IN THE BODY.  STRUCTURAL PROTEIN GOES TOWARDS SKIN, TISSUES AND FIBROUS TISSUES. IT'S THE GLUE THAT HOLDS THE BODY TOGETHER. COLLAGEN IS A MAJOR COMPONENT IN NEARLY EVERY TYPE OF TISSUE IN YOUR BODY INCLUDING SKIN, TENDONS, ORGANS, MUSCLES, LIGAMENTS AND BRAIN.

For a period of time, our body can make the collagen it needs, but eventually, the production of collagen starts to slow down. It's a protein and a strong fibrous substance that is woven into dozens of your body’s tissues and is responsible for the fitness and elasticity of your skin. It also strengthens your hair and nails.

What's in collagen?

Collagen is composed of amino acids including glutamine, arginine, glycine and proline.  Amino acids are the building blocks for proteins.

What are the types of collagen?

Scientists have found over 28 types of collagen.

Type I makes up more than 90% of the collagen in your body - skin, tendons, muscle, bones, ligaments, organs and other connective tissues.

Type II is found in cartilage.

Type III is found in skin and blood vessels.

Can I buy vegan collagen powder?

Unfortunately, there’s no known source of plant-based collagen.  Plants don’t contain collagen, only animal proteins, specifically in the connective tissue and bones.

What are the benefits?

According to a number of studies published in the Journal of Science and Food and Agriculture and Skin Pharmacology and Physiology, using collagen supplements for four to 12 weeks can promote elasticity, increase skin moisture, reduce wrinkle depth and hydration to the skin.

Can you put collagen on topically?

When you apply a skincare product with collagen on your skin, it's not possible for collagen to penetrate. Collagen molecules are too big to be absorbed through the skin, which means these creams and serums don't provide results.

How do I get collagen-rich foods?

Bone broth, poultry, eggs, bone marrow, fish + shellfish, organ meats and collagen supplements. Foods high in Vitamin C help stimulate collagen production, such as broccoli, kale, berries, and citrus. A diet that includes a large variety of fresh fruit and vegetables also boosts your intake of antioxidants. This further protects the body from oxidative stress that deteriorates collagen in the body at an increased rate.

What destroys collagen?

Sun, poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption and smoking.
